ICE

Slurpees, sex and soundwaves

It is summer and has been for over a week, unfortunately. I've been enthralled with Alaska ever since I can remember--as a kid I'd watch the Iditarod and see three of my favorite things: cold and dogs and sledding. I've always threatened to move to Alaska ever since I was 13 when "Northern Exposure" premiered on TV and gave me a (albeit faux) peak into what Alaska could be like. I still fantasize about moving there, especially now that I'm a glassblower and where else would a gal who makes her art from 2200 degree molten glass yet loves cold want to be? Yeah, Alaska.

The remoteness, the quiet, the lack of Ford Mustangs--it all sounds terribly good to me. And I'm guessing that it may be one of the last places in the United States where the Venus of Willendorf type of lady is found to be more venerated than the quite possibly not-too-healthy heroin chic. I like being soft and voluptuous and I like taking up space in a room. I tend to be very quiet and shy at first so sometimes I let my body, my clothes, my eyeglasses speak for me. All of my curviness does overheat me, too. Ergo, we come full-circle as to why Lindsay and cold are a perfect match.

I love ice. No, I love ice. Ask anyone who knows me. I get ice cube trays as presents. I get ice put down my shirt and I smile. I even ask for ice at Indian restaurants. I like approximately five ice cubes in each beverage. I want everything 33 degrees. Including my beer. Which is not decorous, I realize, especially to my snobbish about Belgian beers roommate, Matt, but I like it cold, and I don't care what it is. Iced coffee? Yeah, I invented it.

One of my favorite pastimes is to have sex in summer (well, not that it's my preference to have sex in summer, but sex must occur often, and summer is inevitable) and immediately go to 7-11 and get a Slurpee. When I saw the movie "Reality Bites", I was quite excited to see Lelaina and Michael have the exact same ritual. You gotta cool down somehow after working up all that heat. As a matter of fact, there was a really great story on NPR this morning about 7-11s and ice. It was a pretty long segment about Texas Icehouses--a really awesome segment, I should say. San Antonio was the Antarctic of the United States; who would have thought? Ice is nice.
